Pollen Allergies
Spring has sprung!
This time of year is full of sunny days, lovely long dog walks and lots of outdoor fun. However it also the time of year when the pollen count can be at its highest. As we all know, dogs can suffer from allergies just like us humans, although they do not react in the same way.
Dogs tend to lick, bite or scratch themselves a lot due to the pollen that gets into their fur, ears, eyes and pads of their feet. The skin in those areas then absorbs the pollen, resulting in your dog trying to soothe it themselves, by licking, biting or scratching those particular areas. If this is happening excessively, then it can lead to hair loss, scabbing or ear infections.
The main symptoms to look out for are:
- Itchy, red, moist or scabbed skin
- Itchy, runny eyes
- Itchy back or base of tail
- Sneezing
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Snoring caused by an inflamed throat
- Paw chewing/swollen paws
If your dog is experiencing any of the above symptoms, here is how you can help them!
- A trip to the vets is always best!
- Wipe your dog’s paws with a damp towel to remove the pollen several times a day
- Give your dog a nice bath in some hypo-allergenic shampoo
